Paulo Jobim, son of the composer and conductor Antônio Carlos Jobim (19271994), died on Friday morning (4 November) in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 72. He had been treating bladder cancer for about a decade and couldn’t resist the complications of the disease.
A musician like his father, Paulo was a singer, guitarist, flutist and arranger in addition to his degree in architecture. He was one of the names behind the Institut Antônio Carlos Jobim, which since 2001 has been committed to preserving the maestro’s musical and poetic work and making it accessible to the public.
Paulo, Tom’s firstborn, even performed alongside his father as well as other big names in Brazilian pop music like Milton Nascimento and Chico Buarque.
Among the passions inherited from his father was an interest in environmental protection, which led Paulo to sign urban projects that today help preserve areas in places like Chapada dos Guimarães in Mato Grosso.
The death information was confirmed by the institute dedicated to Tom’s work, which did not provide details of the wake and burial. Paulo leaves behind three children, including musician Daniel Jobim.
