Myanmar: The police have protested against the coup.
The parallel government of national unity reported that at least 2,937 police officers took part in protests organized by the civil defense movement against last year’s coup in Myanmar.
According to the report, there are two police majors, 12 captains, 44 lieutenants, 82 lieutenants, one corporal, 108 corporals, 513 police corporals, 2,129 enlisted police, 16 secretaries and 30 prison officers.
It has been reported that most of the police officers who took part in the movement are fresh out of academy and just want to serve the public, said an officer who recently resigned from the police force.
The officers were trained under the democratic government, so some cannot accept the situation where the military has illegally taken control of the country, he said.
The unidentified agent added that many left the armed forces when the military junta, which has ruled the country since February 2021, forced them to commit crimes against humanity.
For the government of national unity, a parallel administration created with officials and ethnic minority representatives who were ousted last year, military personnel participating in the movement will play an important role in the return to democracy.
Myanmar has been in chaos since the coup and, according to human rights groups, security forces have killed more than 1,100 people and arrested another 9,000.
