After spending 12 years with the Warriors organization, Bob Myers’ role as an analyst at ESPN requires him to look at the game of basketball from a whole new perspective.
During a recent interview with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on “The Woj Pod,” Myers explained that consuming NBA games in this new role is a welcome change compared to the anxieties of watching games as a general manager.
“It’s peaceful, it’s great,” Myers told Wojnarowski. “Look, 12 years of just having everything, right? The adrenaline, the competitive spirit, the fear. Which was great for the time I did it, but I haven’t seen an NBA game without emotion, without real pain, joy, everything in between, frustration, in a long time. And I love the game, I love basketball. But when I watch so many games at once, I have to think about my colleagues and everything that is happening through their thoughts.”
It may still be early in the 2023-24 NBA season, but Myers revealed that it is never too early for a front office member to jump to conclusions about their roster based on a limited sample size.
“Play one, whatever happens, you overreact to it,” Myers said. “So when you lose the first game you think, ‘Wow, maybe I didn’t put the right squad together,’ when you win you think you made it in the draft, free agency or whatever. For me, at least at this point in my life.” I think the easiest way to say it is: it felt right to be where I am. I should be where I am right now.
Myers had an incredible run at Golden State, helping build one of the greatest dynasties the NBA has ever seen while earning Manager of the Year honors in 2015 and 2017.
The Warriors went 679-355 in 11 seasons with Myers as general manager and won four NBA titles while establishing themselves as the preeminent team of their era.
Golden State’s postseason dominance under Myers was particularly notable. With a record of 108-51, they were the only NBA franchise to surpass 100 playoff wins between 2012 and 2022.
Now that Myers has settled into his new role, he can comfortably watch the team he once oversaw strive for another title with a core he helped build.
