NATO conducts its annual “Baltops 2022” naval exercise in the Baltic Sea from June 5 to June 17. Membership applicants Sweden and Finland are also involved.

They are now also reporting a mysterious substance that appeared in the middle of the sea between the two countries and covers a huge area of ​​about 77 square kilometers. That’s more than the area of ​​the Austrian state capital, Salzburg.

According to the ORF report, the unknown substance was discovered by the Swedish coast guard in the stretch between the municipalities of Söderhamn and Härnosand, in the so-called Gulf of Bothnia. The photos show a long carpet of open sea that stretches across the Swedish and Finnish economic zones.

The Scandinavians have already started preliminary investigations into a possible environmental crime. It is now also determined which ships were in the area and what cargo they had on board. It is unclear whether there could also be a connection with NATO and Russian military maneuvers.
