Nancy Pelosi expresses optimism for her husband’s recovery in her first public statement since his return

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made her first public comments after her husband Paul left the hospital as he is still recovering from an attack by an intruder on the couple’s San Francisco home last week.

Speaking via Zoom on Friday at a Democratic Party fundraiser titled “Strengthening Our Democracy,” Pelosi addressed her husband’s condition.

She said: “Paul came home yesterday. This allows me to be at home with you all. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind words, your prayers and your well wishes for Paul.’

Pelosi added: “It’s going to be a long road but he’ll be fine. And it’s just as tragic as it happened, but we still have to be optimistic. He’s surrounded by family so it’s a wonderful thing.’

The Speaker of the House also referred to her husband’s condition in a fundraising email sent out Friday night, in which she expressed similar sentiments.

NBC News has issued a bombshell alleging that Paul Pelosi failed to tell responding cops he was in danger just before he was injured in a hammer attack on his San Francisco home last week.

The clip, released by the media early Friday morning, cited sources close to the investigation who claimed US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband did not declare an emergency or say he was in distress when police officers responded to his 911 call outside his door appeared .

Emmy Award-winning journalist Miguel Almaguer’s report claimed the 82-year-old walked a few feet from officers and into the foyer to join David DePape, 42, who had previously broken into the home armed with a hammer.

When Pelosi reportedly took steps away from responding officers and toward DePape, they saw him hit Pelosi with the gavel, the report claimed.

The NBC News report also noted that it was not clear what Pelosi’s mental state was when he reportedly retired from the police force, and responding officers appeared unaware that it was Nancy Pelosi’s home who has a security detail and is in Washington. DC at the time of the attack.

The report, which differs from court documents filed earlier this week, was released Friday morning.

According to the New York Post, the report was withdrawn earlier this afternoon with the statement: “Friday’s NBC report was removed with the statement: ‘The play should not have aired because it did not meet NBC News reporting standards. ‘

Paul Pelosi was discharged from the hospital on Thursday and returned to the same San Francisco home where he was assaulted a week ago.

Carrying zip ties, DePape broke into the home in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood and shouted “Where’s Nancy” — the same phrase used by Capitol rioters on Jan. 6.

According to court documents filed earlier this week, Pelosi told the intruder that his wife wasn’t there and wouldn’t be there for several days, so DePape said he would wait. Pelosi was somehow able to get into the bathroom where he called 911.

DePape told investigators he wanted to hold Nancy Pelosi captive and talk to her. He said if the speaker told “the truth” he would let her go, and if she “lied” he would “break her kneecaps.”

“She would then have to be driven into Congress, which would show other members of Congress that her actions have consequences,” he explained.

DePape also later said that he broke into the house through a glass door with the hammer.

According to a Justice Department press release, Paul Pelosi, who was the only one home when DePape broke in, called police, who arrived two minutes later to find a fight over a gavel.

When officers Kolby Wilmes and Kyle Cagney responded to the residence by ringing the doorbell, DePape reportedly told Pelosi not to answer the door, but Pelosi did it with his left hand anyway.

Standing in the dimly lit foyer, Pelosi and DePape faced officers when Pelosi calmly greeted them, according to the police report.

When one of the officers asked the men what was going on, DePape said, “Everything is fine,” and pulled his hands to his body. When an officer turned on his flashlight, DePape could be seen holding the lower handle of the hammer with one hand and Pelosi’s right arm with the other. Pelosi’s right hand was also on the hammer’s handle.

When an officer ordered the men to “drop the hammer,” DePape raised the hammer and said, “Um, no” as he tried to pull it away from Pelosi, who shouted “Hey, hey!”

DePape then gained control of it and punched Pelosi in the head, knocking Pelosi unconscious, San Francisco FBI special agent Stephanie Minor wrote in a federal criminal charge and warrant filing.

DePape was formally charged with attempted murder in a San Francisco court Tuesday afternoon. He pleaded not guilty to charges against him including assault, attempted murder and attempted kidnapping.

Immigration officials confirmed Thursday morning that the suspect, Canadian DePape in custody, entered the United States illegally in 2008 by crossing the Mexican border.

The U.S. Capitol Police said Thursday they are conducting an investigation into security procedures for the number of lawmakers who are receiving some form of protection. The speaker herself has 24-hour security traveling with her.

The attack left Paul Pelosi with a fractured skull and injuries to his arms and hands, which the spokesman’s office said required surgery. He returned home on Thursday where he will continue treatment.

The real estate and venture capital executive “remains under medical care while he continues a lengthy process of recovery and recovery at home,” the spokeswoman said in a statement from her office.

The incident, just days before the November elections, has again called for Congress to tighten security amid mounting threats against lawmakers.

Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat who is second in line to the presidency, was in Washington at the time.

US Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said in a weekend memo to lawmakers that the attack is “a grim reminder of the threats facing elected officials and families in 2022.”

In a speech on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden linked the attack to the political violence unleashed on Congress by supporters of ex-President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021.

Republicans, he said, have “encouraged violence and intimidation of voters and poll officials.”

“This is the road to chaos in America,” he said.
