Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was “violently assaulted” by an assailant who broke into his San Francisco home early Friday. Paul Pelosi, 82, was hospitalized and is expected to make a full recovery, his spokesman Drew Hammill said in a statement.
Nancy Pelosi was out of town at the time. Hammill said the assailant was in custody and that the motive for the attack, which occurred in the closing stages of the November 8 general election campaign, was under investigation.
“The President and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved and are asking for privacy at this time,” Hammill said in the statement.
It is not known whether the attack was politically motivated. Nancy Pelosi, 82, is running for a California district in the November 8 election. She is the current Speaker or President of the House of Representatives, a position she has held since 2019 and previously held between 2007 and 2011. She is expected to leave her after the election, in which polls indicate Republicans will take control of the lower house of Congress.
Pelosi is one of the figures of the Democratic Party most hated by staunch supporters of Donald Trump and a frequent target of his social media attacks. He was in office during the January 6, 2021, session when insurgents stormed the Capitol. The parliamentary commission investigating these incidents, which Trump recently summoned to testify, released videos a few weeks ago showing the attack being experienced from the inside, starring Nancy Pelosi.
Paul Pelosi owns Financial Leasing Services, a financial and real estate investment and advisory firm. He has been married to Nancy Pelosi for 59 years, with whom he has five children. He made the news last May after being arrested for drunk driving, for which he was sentenced to five days in prison in August, although the time he was incarcerated was enough. After pleading guilty, he also admitted to undergoing a court-ordered eight-hour work regimen. She is also on probation for three years.
