Nathaniel Hackett can’t disagree with Willie Gay’s assessment of the Jets’ offense – NBC Sports

Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay said the quiet part out loud when asked what he sees on film from Zach Wilson and the Jets’ offense.

“Damn, that was a tough question. I can not lieGay said with a laugh and a pause, via video from KSHB’s Aaron Ladd. “A team that wants to run the ball. This wasn’t supposed to be funny or anything, but A-Rod [Aaron Rodgers] was injured and the team almost panicked. At least that’s what I see. They have great running backs, so now they’re just trying to hit and ground.”

Gay told the truth: The Jets stink.

They rank last in the NFL in yards per game (225), passing yards per game (133.7) and points per game (14.0). Wilson, who replaced Rodgers in four games this season when the four-time league MVP suffered a torn Achilles tendon, ranks last in passer rating with 57.0.

Wilson, who also took a hit from Joe Namath and Jets fans this week, dismissed Gay’s comments.

“That’s fine,” Wilson said. “We are working on improving and getting better. He’s a great player, but obviously he’s the competition, so I can understand why he has those comments, but we’ll be ready as an offense.”

The truth is the truth, so Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett didn’t sugarcoat it when asked about Gay’s comments.

“I mean, if you look at the overall performance over the last three games, it’s not pretty,” Hackett said. “I mean, these are facts. Like everyone who questions us, we have the right to prove everyone wrong, but in the end we have to do it. The offense has to come together. They have to play physical downhill football and not accept those negative yardage plays.”

The Jets are sticking with Wilson despite his problems and theirs, and that means this week could be even worse for them against the reigning Super Bowl champions.
