National Health Award presented in the Dominican Republic

In coordination with the Dominican Medical College and with the support of the Pan American Health Organization (WHO), the Ministry also recognized other research on breast cancer, bone health, thoracoabdominal trauma in polytraumatized patients, heart failure, cervical cancer, human papilloma viruses, hyperbilirubinemia and diabetes.

During the award ceremony, the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Daniel Rivera, the winners to continue their research so that their results can be used to make decisions and develop health policies based on scientific evidence.

Rivera stated that the results of these studies contribute to the well-being of patients.

He believed that research was an imperative to address current challenges and strengthen the ability to respond to future contingencies.

“Public hospitals that publish scientific articles have been shown to be more effective because they provide better diagnostics and pharmacological and surgical treatments.

They also have lower mortality and help reduce healthcare expenditure by about one percent,” he explained.

Meanwhile, WHO/PAHO representative in the country, Alba María Ropero, welcomed the initiative of the MSP and the Medical School to promote the awarding of the prize.

In this context, he explained that research plays a fundamental role in strengthening performance assessment and improving the health system.

At the end of the event, the first call for the dissemination of scientific articles was announced in the Dominican Journal of Public Health, a publication in digital format, Open Access, promoted by the Ministry.

Its aim is to become a reference in the dissemination of scientific results in public health and related fields, promoting the transmission of knowledge and the exchange of ideas.
