National mourning and threats after attack in Iran

After the deadliest attack in decades, Iran today held a national day of mourning and issued threats against the masterminds.

Iranian authorities accused Israel and the US of “responsibility for this crime”, which the US government rejected. According to the latest information, 84 people died in yesterday's attack in Kerman.

At least one suicide attack

At least one of the two explosions was caused by a suicide bomber. This was the result of the video surveillance assessment, state news agency IRNA reported on Telegram, citing an unnamed source in the southern Iranian city of Kerman.

The background to the second explosion has not yet been conclusively clarified; Another suicide attack is suspected.

US government sees traces of IS

President Ebrahim Raisi said yesterday that “there is no doubt that the perpetrators of this cowardly act will soon be identified and punished”. Iran's spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, blamed the “evil and criminal enemies of the Iranian nation” and announced a “forceful response”.

A high-ranking member of the US government compared the attack to attacks by the Islamic State (IS) jihadist militia. No one has yet officially claimed responsibility for the attack.
