National pride: Peruvian athletes win medals at the Pan American Games

In a historic achievement in all the Pan American Games that we have had to participate in outside our country, the Peruvian delegation managed to win the edition of Santiago 32 medals (10 gold, 6 silver and 16 bronze). In the overall medal count, we ranked 9th out of 41 countries in America.

Gold awards went to surfing (3), athletics (3), sailing (2), squash (1) and cycling (1). It is important to highlight that the gold medals in sailing and cycling are historic because they were won for the first time, and to highlight that in squash Diego Elías repeated the gold of Lima 2019. On this occasion we have overtaken Venezuela, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic. who were above us in previous games.

“These 32 medals for the country are a joint achievement of the national sports associations Peruvian Olympic Committee and the Peruvian Sports Institute. What is interesting is the ten gold medals that put us one medal away from Lima 2019, even though the budget has been systematically cut by 50 percent since Lima 2019. We have the perfect opportunity to increase support for Peruvian sport from the public and private sectors and start an unprecedented development in the almost century-long history of the Olympic movement in the country,” said Renzo Manyari, President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee.

“I am very happy to have achieved this gold medal and the silver medal with my partner. I am very proud to represent Peru and continue to achieve success for our country. As for the support, it is improving, it is not what it should be, but what is there is there. It should grow because the Olympics are around the corner and the only thing I ask is that a program for Paris comes out in January, like what happened for Santiago, we should not delay too much,” he explained.

García concluded: “It is important that support is there for everyone. With César (Rodríguez) we are aiming for great things at the Olympics, I believe that we could achieve a medal, it would be great if they supported him well, because with him we are going to Europe, there it is necessary, together to train .”

The one who also spoke was his partner, Cesar Rodriguez, who confessed that he does not have a sponsor brand. “It is a bit unfortunate because there are no private companies that can join this Olympic dream, where I am also aiming to qualify for mixed competitions. “It’s a little sad.”
