NATO warns Putin against using chemical weapons

DECRYPTION – Russia has used chemical weapons in the past, but only in targeted assassinations.

Taboo weapons threaten the Ukrainian battlefield. To gain an advantage on the grounds that it can’t get it normally, Russia might be tempted to use even more horrifying and destructive weapons that are banned or frowned upon, the states fear. It has already used, in particular, according to the UN report, cluster bombs and wide-range explosives in the bombing of the east of the country. They are especially dangerous in urban areas.

Moscow may also be tempted to use tactical, more limited-yield nuclear weapons, some experts suggest, due to the Kremlin chief’s frequent allusions to nuclear weapons. The hypothesis seems unlikely given the implications, but the mere mention of it is enough to horrify.
