Navalny, a prisoner hero who doesn't warm the world

Dear Aldo,
I feel a little sorry for Navalny: he returned to Russia spontaneously, perhaps he underestimated the risks. I am amazed at the silence in which his story unfolds in Italy, where we are ready to take to the streets for much more insignificant things. What do you think?
Marco Sestini, Rome

Navalny is certainly an opponent of Putin. The Corriere tells the painful story, but something doesn't add up for me (I will be considered a friend of the dictator!): remarkable availability, children in foreign boarding schools, some curiosities such as hospitalization in Germany and subsequent free return to Russia, today from the Gulag he uses the Internet with Twitter against the regime…
Luciano Cantaluppi, Turin

Dear readers,
Alexei Anatolevicˇ Navalny a hero. I have been writing this for many years and each time I receive a flood of emails – I am not referring to yours, kind Mr. Cantaluppi – informing me that a murderous criminal is attacking the unity of the Russian homeland. In reality, Navalny is a Russian nationalist. Not a leftist. a patriot who, unlike the war criminal Putin, wants the well-being of his country, for which he risks his fortune, his loved ones and his life. Navalny had spent over a year under house arrest. was poisoned, fell into a coma and risked death. Germany welcomed him. But Navalny did not want to live in exile; let alone become a pawn in the conflict between Putin and Angela Merkel. Navalny wanted to fight at home and, if necessary, die. So he returned to Moscow, where he knew that the handcuffs and the cell would wait for who knows how long, and he demonstrated physical courage from other times worthy of a Risorgimento hero. However, Garibaldi was the most famous man in the world in his time. Unfortunately, we cannot say the same about Navalny. His arrest, the persecution of his associates – all in exile or in prison -, the brutal repression of the demonstrators who took to the streets in his defense have not evoked the emotions they deserve in the world public. Of course, Navalny is a hero, not a saint. Many of his ideas are questionable, as can be seen from the interview with Paolo Valentino in Corriere seven years ago. In his eyes, Enzo Bettiza had seen the hint of madness that he believed flashed in the looks of Belarusians. But Navalny is not isolated. The last time he was able to stand for election, when he ran for mayor of Moscow in 2013, he received 27%. His complaints about the regime's corruption were borne out by the facts. Dictatorships usually fall when they lose wars. Defeating Russia is very difficult, as is the case with Ukraine. But we also cannot surrender to Putin.

TODAY’S OTHER LETTERS

My retired father had to pay for a visit

Today, my retired father, albeit with a smile on his face, is paying the price for the years he worked in the factory and for his advancing age. When he worked, he was used to arriving at the factory an hour before the start of his shift to present change to his previous colleague; Today he has to wait 10-12 months to visit a public facility. But this time his hands hurt, he doesn't want to wait and decides to go to a well-known private clinic in Novara, where a qualified doctor works after the end of his hospital shifts: 180 euros and within a few days of one visit he was diagnosed with trigger finger syndrome and a cortisone injection was performed to relieve the pain and reactivate hand mobility. However, the doctor emphasizes the need for surgical intervention: the operation must be performed in the public hospital and requires long waiting times (at least 2 years), but in case my father agreed to do it privately for a fee, it would take some weeks the doctor would guarantee availability to carry out the operation in the same public hospital. My father asks for clarification, but the doctor seems annoyed and offended because he does not see the possibility of avoiding the queue by paying for the operation accepted, as if his professionalism and his work were not recognized. The visit lasts approximately 15 minutes and ends with a request to leave the room to make room for the next patient. My father returns home dismayed: Why does someone who has paid taxes for years (and still pays them!) to support public services have to pay additional amounts exactly when he needs them in order to use them?
