The biggest news on day one of NBA Free Agency had nothing to do with a free agent, but rather Kevin Durant requesting a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. And when a tree falls in Brooklyn, the impact is felt across the league, especially in Los Angeles.
Now that Durant is on the way out, the Nets have little incentive to keep Kyrie Irving. And that opens the door again for the Lakers to enter the Sweepstakes for a player that the team is interested in and has the means to acquire. Unlike other players of Irving’s caliber, his otherworldly nature limits his value in the league, to say the least, and allows the wealthy Lakers to join the discussion.
On the latest episode of “I Love Basketball,” Raj and Sabreena were again trying to decide if all the off-court drama should keep the Lakers from getting involved with Kyrie Irving, and once again they drifted apart over what the team should do.
One factor that has brought Sabreena Raj’s point closer is the overall state of the Lakers’ roster, which after opening day of free agency doesn’t look any closer to being a championship-contesting group. Raj and Sabreena discussed what they’ve learned about the Lakers’ overall team-building philosophy from their first round of free agent signings, whether it makes sense for the players they have, and whether fans have faith in the front office going forward should have.
