Nearly 300 people were buried in a mass grave in the Ukrainian city of Bucha, just outside Kyiv, the city’s mayor said.

“In Bucha we have already buried 280 people in mass graves,” said Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk AFP news agency via phone. Fedoruk told the news agency the streets were “littered with corpses”.

AFP journalists reported earlier on Saturday that they saw 20 bodies in civilian clothes lying on a single street in Bucha.

Russian troops have been attempting to take the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv since the invasion began on February 24, but Russian troops have met stiff resistance across the country. The death toll was high on both sides, leading to the use of mass graves in other Ukrainian cities such as Mariupol.

Russia’s defense ministry announced last week that it would scale back its military attacks on Kyiv, although the United States has been skeptical of these claims. Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said Saturday the country had regained control of “the entire Kyiv region.” AFP.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Saturday that retreating Russian troops would leave mines around Ukrainian homes and “even the bodies of those killed,” creating a “catastrophic” situation for civilians, the Associated Press reported.

“It’s still not possible to return to normal life as it used to be, even in the areas we’re retaking after the fighting,” Zelenskyy said, per the AP. “We must wait until our country is demined, wait until we can assure you that there will be no more shelling.”
