The number of asylum applications in the previous year increased again compared to the preliminary figures. According to the recently published final balance sheet, there were at least 39,930 orders in 2021, an increase of 170 percent.t. In 2020 there were only 14,775 registrations. Last year’s numbers are the highest since 2016, when more than 42,000 applications were received. However, we are a long way from 2015, the peak of the wave of refugees from Syria, with more than 88,000 requests.
According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, Austria ranked second in the EU after Cyprus in terms of so-called “pollution per capita”.in absolute numbers, fifth behind Germany, France, Spain and Italy.
Asylum applications were again heavily male dominated in 2021. Only 2,700 women, but almost 25,300 men have applied for asylum. The rest are children and young people, 5,600 of them unaccompanied. 57 percent of all refugees fall into the 18-35 age group.
13,600 negative asylum decisions issued
A good asylum decision was issued 12,000 times last year, about 13,600 times a legally negative decision. Nearly 4,300 cases received a positive decision regarding subsidiary protection. There were also a good 3,100 humanitarian residence permits. There were almost 28,000 open procedures. About 66,000 cases were decided last year.
The top country of origin last year was Syria, with nearly 16,300 applications from its citizens, relatively well ahead of Afghanistan with over 8,700. Third place went to Morocco with over 1,900. There were only 91 from the now war-torn Ukraine. Of the nations with the most candidates, Syrians have by far the best chance of recognition, with just under 78%. For comparison: among Afghans it is only 26%, among Moroccans 0.2%.
Preliminary figures have been available since early March. At that time, the number of orders was over 38,600. This would correspond to an increase of 161%.
