Nearly full employment: a turning point in the Styrian labor market

Crisis or crisis: A turning point of sorts is currently taking place in the Styrian labor market. “We are clearly moving in the direction of the employee market,” emphasizes AMS State Manager Karl-Heinz Snobe. What it means: More and more companies are no longer able to find candidates for jobs. For job seekers, this opens up completely new professional opportunities they are increasingly choosing the company they want to work for: “Local companies have to adapt to this,” explains Snobe.

About the numbers: At the end of June, 25,050 people were registered as unemployed and 7,598 people were in training. A total of 32,648 Styrians were unemployed. At the same time, however, the number of employees rose to around 553,000. According to national calculations, unemployment in Styria was therefore 4.3 percent and therefore close to full employment, which is defined as an unemployment rate of four percent.

registration of vacancies

While the number of unemployed is falling steadily, the number of vacancies reported to the AMS is rising to a record 20,721 jobs. “This shortage of workers and skilled workers presents major challenges for many companies,” says Snobe. He sees five possible levers for dealing with this situation. More qualifications for jobseekers, higher employment rates for women, longer employment for older people, skilled immigration and career guidance for young people.

Because the so-called learning gap is widening, especially among young people. Currently, 1214 stages are available in Styria. But there are only 468 young people currently looking for an internship.
