Indirect negotiations to end hostilities on the LebaneseIsraeli border will begin during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins next week, Lebanon's interim prime minister Najib Mikati said on Tuesday.
The powerful Lebanese armed group Hezbollah and Israel have been exchanging aggression for nearly five months alongside the war in Gaza, which has sparked diplomatic efforts to prevent the situation from worsening.
In an interview on Tuesday evening with local Lebanese broadcaster Al Jadeed, Mikati said that longterm stability on the southern border would require Israel to stop violating Lebanon's territorial integrity and return the areas it occupied along the border.
He said Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri who is close to Hezbollah was considering a proposal put forward orally by U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein, who was in Beirut on Monday.
Hezbollah is one of many Iranaligned groups in the Middle East that have entered the conflict since October 7, when Hamas militants invaded Israel from the Gaza Strip and launched a fierce Israeli land, air and sea offensive against Gaza triggered.
Hezbollah, a Hamas ally, says its campaign aims to support Palestinians under Israeli bombardment.
