On Saturday, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) paid a “solidarity visit” to Ukraine, which was under military attack by Russia. In the capital Kiev, he will meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Mayor Vitali Klitschko. The program also includes an on-site inspection in the city of Bucha, where more than 300 civilians died in Russian war crimes suspects. Return is on Sunday.

Nehammer (ÖVP) first flew to Poland on Friday night, from where the delegation continued on an overnight train. The purpose of the visit is “to continue to provide Ukraine with the best possible humanitarian and political support”. Nehammer: “It is important that, within the framework of our neutrality, we support Ukraine both on a humanitarian and political level. My visit to Kiev and Bucha also serves to show our solidarity with the Ukrainian people.” The “war crimes that have become known” must be “fully clarified”, “by independent and international experts”.

On Friday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Foreign Affairs Commissioner Josep Borrell traveled to President Selenskyj. Among other things, it was agreed to reopen the representation of the European Union. In response to the killing of hundreds of civilians in Bucha, there is said to be a fifth EU sanctions package against Russia. Borrell also wants to make €7.5 million available for investigations Ukraine is carrying out into alleged war crimes in the Kiev suburb of Bucha and elsewhere – such as Stoyank and Irpin. Russia has always denied the allegations.
