Why is the International Day of Happiness celebrated on March 20?

In 2012, The UN General Assembly has declared March 20 as the International Day of Happiness by resolution 66/281. This celebration was created to highlight the importance of happiness and well-being, considered universal goals of humanity, and its crucial role in government policies. Furthermore, the resolution emphasizes the need for a more comprehensive, fair and balanced approach to economic growth. This approach aims to promote sustainable development, the eradication of poverty and the well-being and happiness of all people.

Lily Corley, Lipscomb University, offers insight into how happiness can vary with age. Although the challenges and obligations grow over the years, our independence and knowledge also grow. Encouraging creativity, the importance of relationships, and finding healing and understanding of the “inner child” in situations where there was little support in childhood can be crucial factors in increasing our happiness later in life.
