The streamer has decided not to move forward with The Mothership, a film that completed production in 2021 but was hit by delays

The Halle Berry-led sci-fi thriller 'The Mothership' will not be released after Netflix decided to stop post-production.

The Mothership wrapped filming in 2021, was originally scheduled for release in 2022, and the streamer announced a short clip for the year's big releases in a trailer. However, according to Variety, the film was delayed several times and has now been canceled entirely.

In reports from The Wrap, there are sources who claim the decision was not “taken lightly.” The film reportedly required “significant reshoots,” which would have been expensive and difficult as the child actors got older.

It was written and directed by British Oscar nominee Matthew Charman, who co-wrote the screenplay for Steven Spielberg's 2015 drama Bridge of Spies. He also co-wrote the romance novel Suite Francaise with Michelle Williams.

The news follows other similarly axed films, such as the $90 million DC adventure “Batgirl,” which was canceled during post-production, and last year's revelation that “Coyote vs. Acme” was also canceled despite completing production would be published. Both were the result of Studio Warners opting for a tax write-off. The latter, a live-action/animation hybrid starring John Cena, has since been shopped around.

Last year, Netflix decided not to release two finished films – the thrillers “The Inheritance” and “House/Wife” – instead allowing the makers to buy them elsewhere.

This week saw an impressive Q4 report from Netflix with over 13 million new subscribers, beating forecasts. The platform also did well when announcing this year's Oscar nominations, with a tally of 18.

In “The Mothership,” Oscar winner Berry played a single mother who finds an alien object on her farm. Berry previously worked with Netflix on the release of “Bruised,” her directorial debut, and will next be seen in the streamer's action thriller “The Union” opposite Mark Wahlberg.

Neither Berry nor Netflix have made an official statement.
