Netflix may start charging you for sharing your password

Netflix will soon test charging additional fees to primary account holders for exchanging passwords with people outside of their family.

After years of ignoring the issue, Netflix ran a test last year that blocked password sharing for anyone who didn’t live with the account owner.

Netflix will now allow members to share their accounts outside of nearby households, but for a fee.

The rollout will first be tested in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. Reporting a password will cost between $2 and $3.

“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account through features like separate profiles and multiple streams on our Standard and Premium plans,” Netflix director of product innovation Chenggi Long wrote in a blog about the test. .

“While they were hugely popular, they also created some confusion about when and how to share Netflix. As a result, accounts are spread across households, impacting our ability to invest in great new TV shows and movies for our members,” Long added.

According to the Netflix Terms of Service, a customer account “cannot be transferred to anyone outside of your family.”

With the “add additional member” feature, Netflix users with standard and premium plans can add up to two accounts for people they don’t live with.

These accounts will have their own profile, personalized recommendations, username and password, all for less than the cost of a basic Netflix plan.
