Netflix series ‘1899’ canceled after one season

Netflix’s 1899 was canceled after one season.

Showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese announced the news in a joint statement on Instagram on Monday.

“It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that 1899 will not be renewed,” the statement said. “We would have loved to have completed this incredible journey with a second and third season, as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t go the way you planned. So life is.”

The statement continued, “We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

The eight-episode series debuted on Netflix on November 17, 2022 and centered on a migrant steamer’s voyage westbound. The voyage soon takes an unexpected, terrifying turn when another migrant ship, the Prometheus, is discovered adrift in the open sea, leading the group of passengers to confront a mysterious series of events.

The multilingual series featured an international ensemble cast including Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musial, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Rosalie Craig, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, José Pimentão, Isabella Wei, among others Gabby Wong, Jonas Bloquet, Fflyn Edwards, Alexandre Willaume and Anton Lesser.

In an interview with , Adar and Friese teased that they already had ideas for a second and third season of 1899.

The series was a sequel to Adar and Friese’s previous series Dark, which lasted for three seasons. In 2018, Friese and Odar signed an exclusive multi-year deal with the streamer. The deal marked the first European overall deal for Netflix, and 1899 was the couple’s first new series under their overall deal with Netflix.
