Netflix Won’t Renew 1899: The TV Show Has Been Cancelled

The recently released TV series 1899 on Netflix will not be renewed. This was announced by the two co-creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Freise through a note posted on Instagram. At the moment, Netflix hasn’t communicated anything directly.

“It is from the bottom of our hearts that we must tell you that 1899 will not be renewed,” it said. “We would have loved to have completed this incredible journey with a second and third season, as we did with Dark,” her previous series, which was also released on Netflix. “But sometimes things don’t go as planned. So life is. We know this will disappoint millions of fans.”

The Netflix series synopsis states that “mysterious events alter the course of a migrant ship bound for New York in 1899, leaving bewildered passengers with a bewildering conundrum.” The first season, consisting of eight episodes, intertwines the story of two ships and different characters in an increasingly dizzying spiral of mysterious turns. It also ended on a cliffhanger, that is, a narrative event that suspended viewers until the following season.

The launch of the TV series had posted good numbers: between November 21 and 27, it was the second most-watched TV series on Netflix, behind only Wednesday, with over 87 million total hours watched by subscribers.

1899 continued to remain in the top ten most watched English language television series on Netflix through the week ending December 18, when after five weeks on the chart it had been watched for 17.8 million hours.
