I was just lucky to bury a family member and then Netflix offered to show their new original feature film Project Adam. In which, among other things, in this time-warping and family-friendly sci-fi adventure starring Ryan Reynolds, we also get more than just heartbreaking scenes of a child coming to terms with loss. But the older, adult version of this child also returns to the past, armed with the wisdom of years, and gets a chance to close the broken circle a little more.

For an example of what I mean, see this message from a Twitter user to Reynolds on Friday, the day the film debuted on the streaming service. “Wow. I lost my father 10 years ago due to cancer. I watched the movie and I have all the tears and my soul is good … Thank you for the main role and promotion of such a wonderful film. Thank you to all the stars and creators – I was finally able to find ending.” Actor Hugh Jackman did the same, tweet that the movie “home run and give you all the feelings”.

Is Project Adam a comedy?

Those moments that include resignation to grief aside — when Young Adam at one point confesses in a particularly heartbreaking moment that “I think it’s easier to be angry than sad” — there’s definitely an overall tone to the adventure comedy. to this film. Reynolds (Big Adam) plays a time-traveling pilot who teams up with his younger self and his late father to, as Netflix puts it, “come to terms with your past while saving your future.”

One of the things I especially liked were all the references, random or not, to nostalgic movies from my childhood. Example: When “Young Adam” goes outside after a power outage with a flashlight and his dog to explore the forest? He discovers Reynolds in his father’s garage, which reminded me of how Elliot found ET the same way.

There are also Back to the Future and Terminator references throughout. And of course, you can’t help but think of Star Wars while watching the motorcycles chasing the time ship, among other things.

Trailer and ratings

You can watch the trailer for the movie below (it’s also available at this link).

Based on the early reaction the film has received so far, it looks like Netflix definitely has another winner with Project Adam.

The film currently has a pretty strong 85 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, right at the gate. This is based on over 100 ratings. I completely agree with this review from a Rotten Tomatoes user and fully subscribe:

“Ryan Reynolds plays himself, so if you like him, you’ll like this. However, the breakthrough is Walker Scobell. His younger version of Adam has enough of Reynolds’ mannerisms in his speech and delivery manner to easily put aside disbelief and believe in interaction. While the villain is pretty cardboard, this movie is about family and growing up, so the sci-fi part is just the background. It was cool, interesting and fun.”
