New draft constitution causes controversy in Chile

While the extremist Republican Party and the right-wing coalition Chile Vamos defended the project, center-left groups warned that it continued the neoliberal model established during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990).

This proposal opens up abuses and deepens inequalities in our country and does not address the needs and emergencies of the population, warned Communist Party adviser Karen Araya.

During the handover ceremony at the old headquarters of the National Congress in Santiago, Constitutional Council President Beatriz Hevia said she had conducted “a sober, serious and republican process in the broadest sense of the word.”

His statements were not shared by the vice president of this body, Aldo Valle, who pointed out that although the forms were fulfilled from an institutional point of view, the process lacked democratic effectiveness due to the refusal of the majority parties in this case to reach better agreements.

“Of course I do not share the economic, political and cultural project of this proposed constitution,” he said.

In the Council, the Republicans and the Chile Vamos alliance prevailed with their majority and pushed through controversial amendments.

This includes those who attack voluntary abortion in cases of rape, danger to the mother’s life or non-viability of the fetus.

The project also rejects collective bargaining, the right to strike and freedom of association and seeks to favor private health institutions that have turned this service into a business.

Another controversial point concerns the granting of benefits to prisoners convicted of crimes against humanity during the Augusto Pinochet regime (1973-1990).

After receiving the Magna Carta proposal this Tuesday, the President of Chile called for a referendum on December 17 to decide whether to accept or reject it.

“The final time for citizens is opening. Now it really depends on your vote and your decision,” Boric said.

If approved, the president committed to full implementation. However, if it is rejected, he stated that he would continue to work on the implementation of his government program.
