Two weeks after a devastating earthquake in southeastern Turkey, other magnitude 6.4 and 5.8 earthquakes shook the region. The epicenter was in Samandag district of Hatay province. According to official data, at least three people died in Turkey and another 213 were injured and taken to hospitals.
Broadcaster “CNN Türk” reported that people ran into the streets in panic and that there was also a power outage in Hatay. Hatay Mayor Lütfü Savas warned that earthquakes continue, avoid collapsing buildings.
According to the aid organization White Helmets, more than 150 people were injured in northern Syria and several damaged houses collapsed. Syrian activists also reported five dead on Tuesday morning. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, residents of the cities of Aleppo, Tartus and Hama panicked and jumped out of their homes.
In the early morning of February 6, a 7.7 magnitude tremor hit southeast Turkey and northern Syria, followed hours later by a second 7.6 magnitude tremor. In both cases, the epicenter was in the province of Kahramanmaras, in southern Turkey. More than 47,000 people have died so far.
