Jason Bourne could be reincarnated. Universal is developing a new version of the action franchise with All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger at the helm, has confirmed.
The new Bourne project is in early stages of development. Matt Damon, who became an action star in the early 2000s with the role, could potentially be involved, but at this point there is no script and therefore no star commitments. Deadline first reported the news.
Damon played Bourne in a film trilogy from 2002 to 2007 and then took on the role of Jason Bourne in 2016. Based on the novels of late author Robert Ludlum, the feature films revolve around a government official who loses his memory and is hunted by his own country. Jeremy Renner also starred in a spin-off, 2012’s The Bourne Legacy.
Berger was nominated for an Oscar for the screenplay for All Quiet on the Western Front, which won Best Foreign Language Film among his four Oscar wins. Released on Netflix, the World War I film introduced Berger to new audiences unfamiliar with his previous German-language works, including 2014’s Jack and 2019’s All My Love, both of which won awards at the Berlin Film Festival. Focus recently picked up the filmmaker’s film Conclave, which stars Ralph Fiennes and John Lithgow.
Berger is represented by CAA.
