Kali Uchis, Orquideas (Geffen Records)

Full of opulent sensuality, Orquídeas by Kali Uchis is an elegant excursion that pays homage to Colombia's national flower. Symbolizing timeless appeal and mystical grace, this 14-track project seamlessly blends soulful melodies that reflect the delicate, exotic and graceful nature of the orchid itself. Her fourth LP and second predominantly Spanish album effortlessly traverses a spectrum of styles, from the Afrobeat rhythms of “Diosa” to the hauntingly beautiful bolero of “Te Mata”, showcasing the artist's versatility without losing her essence . What is noteworthy is that she reveals another layer of her life's tapestry in the music video for “Tu Corazón Es Mío” / “Diosa”, in which Kali Uchis shares her first pregnancy with her long-time partner and rapper Don Toliver.

With the groovy, bass-heavy “Heladito,” the Colombian-American star explores an untapped niche of neo-soul en Español that can only work with singers like her. Together with Rauw Alejandro, she swaps the house beats of her 2022 work for a pulsating reggaetón sound on “No Hay Ley Parte 2”. In “Igual Que Un Ángel,” Uchis' voice soars to heavenly heights, accompanied by Peso Pluma's R&B-inspired contribution. The sensual reggaetón piece “Labios Mordidos” with Karol G unites two Colombian femmes fatales in a dazzling display of daring flirtations. Across the album, the versatile songwriter and now expectant mother delivers poignant lyrics backed by stellar production that lingers in the soul long after the final note. All while embracing the beauty of creation and growth, much like the orchids she pays homage to. – ISABELA RAYGOZA
