It’s been speculated for some time, now it’s official: Turkey will be called “Turkiye” by the United Nations (UN) with immediate effect.
The country submitted a request to change its name on Wednesday, and the UN accepted it a day later. This means that from now on the country will be called Türkiye in all languages. At the request of the Ankara government, the English term “Turkey” will no longer be used, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Thursday.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu tweeted a photo on Tuesday signing a letter addressed to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. The move is part of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s initiative to “increase our country’s brand equity,” Cavusoglu said.
No more “turkey”.
With the official renaming on the international stage, Turkey also wants to get rid of the English term “Turkey”, which also means turkey. The country has long used “Made in Türkiye” instead of “Made in Turkey” to label its products.
“The name change may seem silly to some, but it puts Erdogan in the role of protector who ensures international respect for the country,” Mustafa Aksakal, a historian who teaches in the US, told the New York Times.
