New protests in the area around Lützerath

After the almost complete evacuation of the German protest village of Lützerath by police, climate activists in the area continued to protest lignite mining.

At the Hambach open pit mine, about 20 kilometers away, a bucket wheel excavator has been busy since the early hours of the morning, as announced today by a spokesman for RWE. Furthermore, climate activists rappelled down in wheelchairs from a road bridge near Lützerath.

The bulldozer in the Rhine lignite mining area has stopped operating, a RWE spokesman said. There are a total of four people on the excavator. The police have been informed.

According to the protest group “Counter-attack – for the good life”, eight activists occupied the bulldozer. The action intends to show solidarity with the people of the village of Lützerath. The group also criticized the police’s actions at the site and asked for the socialization of energy production.

A good four kilometers as the crow flies from Lützerath, climate activists also rappelled down a motorway bridge. A police spokesman said there were two people in wheelchairs. Traffic on Autobahn 44 is working, but nothing is happening on the secondary road under the bridge.

In Lützerath, two activists were still in a tunnel after the weekend, an RWE spokesman said. You are in contact with them. However, the dismantling continues and is already “well advanced”.
