EARTHQUAKE, HEAVY REPLACEMENT IN AFGHANISTAN – After last Saturday’s deadly earthquake ((2053 victims), another violent tremor of magnitude 6.3 occurred at 05:25 a.m. (02:55 a.m. in Italy) at a depth of about 10 km, with the epicenter again in near Herat. According to initial estimates there, at least a hundred people would be injured and numerous houses damaged or destroyed. A figure that is likely to worsen given the already fragile region, which was hit hard by the latest earthquake last Saturday. Updates to follow.

In our dedicated earthquake section you can monitor all earthquakes in Italy and the most important ones worldwide.

Why does an earthquake occur and what does it depend on? Earthquakes are very violent natural phenomena that arise from complex movement dynamics and primarily affect the outermost part of our planet, the earth’s crust. The crust is divided into numerous plates, or pieces assembled like a puzzle; there are at least seven large ones and a dozen smaller ones. These crustal plates rest on a partially melted lower layer with plastic behavior, called the mantle, and move slowly over time, pulled like a kind of treadmill by the convective movements in the mantle itself. The edges of the plates are subject to enormous stresses, which cause the rock to break and break apart into large fractures called faults. Activation of the faults results in earthquakes that can be shallow (causing major damage) or deep (over 50-70 km). Earthquakes can also occur far from plate boundaries, for example in volcanic areas.
