David Corenswet is officially the new Superman, making it a dream come true for the actor. In 2019, Corenswet was promoting his supporting role in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix limited series Hollywood when he told Entertainment Weekly his biggest acting goal was “definitely the role of Superman.” Here we are four years later.
The actor also said he’s aware of his resemblance to Henry Cavill, who played Superman in four of Zack Snyder’s films.

“It caught my attention before the internet got me,” Corenswet told EW of comparisons to Cavill at the time. “But my dream goal is definitely to play Superman. I would like to see someone doing an optimistic review [take on Superman]. I love Henry Cavill’s somber and somber take, but I’d like to see the next one be very bright and upbeat.”
An “upbeat” and “upbeat” Superman sounds exactly like the kind of Superman Corenswet will play in writer-director James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy.” As Gunn Variety said during his casting search, “The next Superman has to be someone who has all the humanity of Superman but is also an alien.” It has to be someone who has the kindness and compassion that Superman has, and someone to hug.”
As Corenswet himself teased back in 2019, his approach to Superman will surely differ from that of the brooding Henry Cavill. Cavill was Superman in Zack Snyder’s DC Universe, which includes the films Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League. James Gunn and Peter Safran now run DC Studios and reboot the DC Universe around a younger Superman, with Corenswet taking on the role of Cavill.

For Corenswet, “Superman: Legacy” marks the biggest project of his career so far. The actor is best known for his supporting roles in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series The Politician and Hollywood. His films include A24’s “Pearl” opposite Mia Goth.
Corenswet’s appearance in Superman: Legacy is joined by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Gunn’s script focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.
Superman: Legacy is slated for release by Warner Bros. on July 11, 2025.
