Are the malls open? What about public transport, banks and libraries? Hours of operation for several facilities are subject to change on New Year’s Day, Sunday 1st January.

Big-box stores and grocery stores are closing, except for essential businesses like pharmacies, convenience stores and some small grocery stores.
On January 1st and 2nd, the Société de transport de Montréal network will operate according to the public holiday schedule.
The Biodôme, the botanical garden and the planetarium welcome young and old on January 1st from 1 p.m. The opening hours of other museums vary. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is closed on January 1st and 2nd while the Science Center is closed on December 31st and January 1st.

SAQ stores will remain closed on January 1st. However, they will remain open until December 31st at 5pm and will reopen on January 2nd at 1pm. The SQDC branches will also remain closed on New Year’s Day.
Banks and cash desks will not be open on Sunday, January 1st. Some remain closed until January 4th.
Most arenas, swimming pools, sports centers and libraries will be closed on January 1st. Montreal residents are encouraged to consult the Ville de Montréal website.
Most municipal offices are closing their doors, as are the city’s eco-centres. Federal agencies and the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) will be closed.
