The musical program of the New Year’s concert
The musical program opens with the Fourth Symphony in A major op. 90 The Italian by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. First performed at the Royal Philharmonic Society in London on May 13, 1833, the work was created during the journey that the musician made in Europe between 1829 and 1831, on the wave of emotions that he experienced in the Italian cities. The second part of the program offers a number of popular songs from the signed operatic repertoire Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Vincenzo Bellini, George Bizet, Peter Mascagni, Giacomo Puccini, Gioachino Rossini and Giuseppe Verdi. Mozart begins with the overture to the Marriage of Figaro. The famous panorama from Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty is followed by two bravura pieces for soprano and tenor: “Casta Diva” from Bellini’s Norma and a page from the French repertoire “La fleur que tu m’avais jetée” from Carmen by Georges Bizet. Then it is the turn of Clemenza di’s chorus «Che del ciel che degli dei» Titus, and an orchestral piece, the intermezzo from Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, which will be followed by two Puccini arias: ‘quando m’en vo” from La Bohème and ‘Nessun dorma’ from Turandot. The Allegro vivacious from the overture to Rossini’s Guglielmo Tell introduces the grand finale, which, as is customary today, features three very attractive choral pieces: “Va, pensiero, sull’ali dorate” from Verdi’s Nabucco, “Padre augusto” from Puccini’s Turandot and the ubiquitous toast “Libiam ne’ felici calici” from Traviata.

The history of the New Year’s concert
On January 29, 1996, a fire destroyed the La Fenice Theater in Venice. Eight years later, in 2004, Anna Elena Averardi, consultant for the maintenance of the image of the Venetian theater, had the idea of organizing a New Year’s concert right there, in the reconstructed theatre. Since then, the idea has been accepted immediately Director of Rai1 Fabrizio Del Noce. An ambitious choice. THEIn fact, the musical New Year has always been associated with the Vienna event, its Strauss waltzes and the “Radetzky March”..
But the desire to mark a rebirth of Venetian theater, a starting point from its own ashes, was successful. The theatre, which for centuries hosted the greatest stars of opera and melodrama, as well as an exceptional orchestra, has now become a symbol of the dawn of art. And a fixed date for spectators.
