In Austria, there is an extremely mild New Year’s Eve. The reason for this is said to be a gentle southwesterly current and a foehn.
The previous New Year’s record was already reached on Saturday at noon with 18.3 degrees at the ZAMG weather station in Aspach (Upper Austria) – it was 18.3 degrees in Berndorf, Lower Austria, measured on the last day of 2021 Over the course of the afternoon temperatures will rise slightly, meteorologists say.
New Year’s Eve in Austria with extremely mild weather
However, the heat record for December is unlikely to be achieved. It is 22.2 degrees, measured on December 16, 1989 at Laz in Vorarlberg.
New Year in Austria again sunny and very mild
On New Year’s Day it will be sunny again and very mild in most parts of Austria, with highs between twelve and 18 degrees. However, especially in the east and south, fog or heavy fog can persist in some places, and here it also remains significantly colder with maximum values around seven degrees.
The hottest turn of the year since measurements began in Switzerland
In Switzerland, however, one of the hottest New Year’s Eves since measurements began in the mid-19th century. New high temperatures have already been registered during the New Year’s Eve, for example in Basel, where the thermometer marked 16.7 degrees at 1 am – a record.
Two factors responsible for high temperatures
Two factors were responsible for the high nighttime temperatures: on the one hand, extremely hot air reached Switzerland from the southwest. On the other hand, the wind constantly mixed the warm air at altitude with the cooler air in the lower layer. With the wind decreasing, the temperature dropped and at 9 am in Basel it was “only” 11.1 degrees.
The German weather service expects up to 20 degrees on New Year’s Eve
In Germany, temperature records must be “pulverized” on New Year’s Eve. The German Weather Service (DWD) predicts temperatures of up to 20 degrees. Some thermometers at stations along the Rhine read 17 degrees earlier on Saturday. “In the southwest and with foehn support also near the Alps there are up to 20 degrees, in the Upper Rhine up to 22 degrees”, predicted a meteorologist.
