Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed at the three major airports serving New York City on Sunday, giving travelers a major headache as rainstorms and deadly flooding battered parts of the Northeast.

More than 1,600 flights have been canceled across the country – with Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports seeing the most delays and cancellations, according to FlightAware.

New Jersey’s airport was the busiest of all US airports with flight cancellations on Sunday.

According to FlightAware data, a total of 365 incoming and outgoing flights — about 30% of all scheduled flights — have been grounded and another 461 delayed in Newark.

The air travel snafu wasn’t just limited to actual flight operations, either.

A Chicago traveler told the Post he was among dozens of passengers who waited more than two hours for their bags after landing in Newark. The United customer said only about a third of the passengers’ bags made it to baggage claim and the other two-thirds appeared to be missing.

United Airlines did not immediately respond to an inquiry about the allegedly lost baggage.

Regions across New York state averaged 1 to 3 inches of total rain. Flash flood warnings have been issued for several areas in the Northeast. NWS

JFK Airport ranked second with the highest number of canceled flights, after Newark, with a total of 331 cancellations both to and from the airport, and LaGuardia was not far behind with 280 canceled flights, according to flight tracking data.

All three airports warned customers to check their flight status before arriving at the airport due to heavy rain and fog in the urban area.

Thunderstorms, heavy rain and flash flooding hit much of the New York metropolitan area on Sunday.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for parts of Queens and the Bronx in the afternoon. It rained between 1 and 3 inches total in most areas of New York — in some places it was as much as 5 inches by nightfall.

The wet weather came after torrential rain hit the Empire State last weekend. The rain and subsequent flooding killed one New Yorker and caused about $50 million in damage, Gov. Kathy Hochul said.
