At least one person was killed and five injured in the collapse of a multi-story parking garage in New York on Tuesday, according to a preliminary figure that could rise quickly.
Authorities believe several people are said to be trapped under debris after the collapse on Ann Street in lower Manhattan’s Financial District around 4 p.m.
At least one person was killed and five others injured, according to the New York City Fire Department. Four of the injured required hospitalization, while the fifth person declined the treatment offered.
Fire Chief James Esposito said the situation was “extremely dangerous”. The second floor of the five-story building collapsed, rendering the rest of the structure unstable.
Rescue workers venture into the rubble with drones and search for more victims.
“The building is completely unstable,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference at the scene of the tragedy.
