New York City Subway Derailment: F Train Service Disrupted After Wheel Falls Off Tracks in Coney Island, Brooklyn

CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn (WABC) — Thursday morning commutes could be significantly impacted for travelers who rely on the F Line, particularly in Brooklyn, after a subway train crashed onto an elevated track near the aquarium on Wednesday derailed at Coney Island.

The incident occurred just before 12:30 p.m. on the subway line that runs above West 6th Street between the 8th Street and Neptune Avenue stations

Two ambulances evacuated 37 people, including workers, within an hour. No injuries were reported.

“The train just shook and fell on its side, that's what it felt like. So I knew straight away it was a derailment. I’ve never experienced it before, but it was obvious,” said Gregory Perelshteim, a passenger on the F train.

The train was pulling into Neptune station at the time of the incident.

The cause of the derailment could not initially be clarified. Transportation department officials said the railcar is relatively new and the investigation is now focused on the tracks themselves.

A photo obtained exclusively by Eyewitness News appears to show tracks that were misaligned at the time of the derailment.

MTA officials said the goal is to have the route back to peak service by Thursday morning.

As of 9 p.m., there was no F train between Avenue X and Coney Island.

A limited free shuttle bus runs in both directions between Avenue X and Coney Island-Stillwell Ave.

A list of travel alternatives can be found on the MTA website.

The disruption comes less than a week after two dozen people were injured when a No. 1 train derailed in Manhattan on Thursday.

“Look, we’re going to get to the bottom of this. I realize that we also had problems last week, of course, and we will get to the bottom of it. But at this point, from the incident, we have “The accident last week and the derailment today appear to be completely unrelated,” said Rich Davey, president of the Transit Authority.
