Good morning Green Nations Gang! As we head into the NFL Draft at the end of April, the Jets currently have 80 players under contract. Somewhat surprisingly, they brought back many of their backups as free agents, and they didn’t fire some of the guys that most Jets fans expected. The Jets have enough cap space left to sign their draft pick, with a small amount left over for season transfers, but that’s about it. After being selected in the draft, there is little free space in the cap. With off-season rosters limited to 90 players and the Jets having nine draft picks, it could very well be that the Jets have more or less done away with free agency. At the end of the roster, there can be a turnover of staff with minimum wage players who are unlikely to make the team. At the top of the list, if a major talent becomes available through a trade, the Jets have enough flexibility to cap by restructuring contracts or cutting players to make a big move, but so far the Jets have balked at such moves. The bread and butter in the middle of the list that the Jets have made is likely to have run out. What you see now, plus the draft picks and the UDFA, could very well be pretty much what the Jets open camp in July.
