New York Mets’ Tylor Megill, 4 relievers combine for no-hitter vs Philadelphia Phillies

NEW YORK — New York Mets starter Tylor Megill and four assists joined forces in the first no-hitter of the Major League Baseball season to throw a whopping 159 pitches and beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 on Friday night.

Megill was drafted after five innings and 88 pitches. From there, the bullpen took over, with Drew Smith, Joely Rodriguez, Seth Lugo and Edwin Diaz completing the second no-hitter in Mets history.

Diaz finished in style, beating Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos and JT Realmuto in ninth place. Mets pitchers combined to become Fan 13 and went six.

Johan Santana threw the Mets’ only previous no-hitter on June 1, 2012, when he hit eight and needed 134 pitches in an 8-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets began playing as an expansion team in 1962.

Mets midfielder Brandon Nimmo made the best defensive play, running to catch Jean Segura’s sinking liner at right center to end the third.

James McCann has now caught two no-hitters in his career, the other coming in 2020 with Lucas Giolito.

A year ago there was a record nine no-hitters in the majors.

Last weekend, six Tampa Bay Rays pitchers combined to carry a no-hit bid into the 10th inning of a scoreless game against the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox broke up the no-hitter and scored two goals at the top of 10th, but the Rays came back and won 3-2. Under MLB official rules, it didn’t count as a no-hitter because Ray’s pitcher didn’t finish the game and didn’t allow any hits.

There have been 16 total no-hitters in MLB history, eight of which have come in the past 20 seasons. The last three were all played by National League teams (Chicago Cubs on June 24, 2021 at the Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers on September 11, 2021 in Cleveland, and Mets on Friday against Phillies).

This was the first no-hitter against the Phillies since Josh Beckett fielded one for the Dodgers in 2014.
