Starling Marte provided RBI’s walk-off single Wednesday night for the hosts New York Mets, who defeated the New York Yankees 3-2 to sweep a two-game interleague series from their Crosstown rivals.
The Mets have won three straight games after a three-game losing streak to extend their lead in the NL East to three games. The Yankees, who started Wednesday with the best record in baseball, are 2-5 since the All-Star break and 10-12 this month.
Eduardo Escobar led in ninth place by doubling the first throw thrown by Wandy Peralta (2-3). Escobar finished third with a bunt from Tomas Nido and stayed there as Brandon Nimmo was credited with a single as Peralta briefly bobbed his comebacker.

Marte then ripped a 1-0 pitch past shortstop and into left field to hit Escobar. Marte raised his arm as he rounded first base before being wrapped up by Pete Alonso and Nimmo as their teammates ambushed them at second base.
Seth Lugo (2-2) hit three in 1 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win.
Max Scherzer fought his way in and out of trouble through seven scoreless innings for the Mets, who went 2-0 into the eighth thanks to a homer by Pete Alonso who led the second and Francisco Lindor’s RBI single in the third.

But David Peterson, the Mets’ unofficial sixth starter, gave up the five-pitch lead in the eighth when he issued a four-pitch walk to Anthony Rizzo before Gleyber Torres homed to the right.
Scherzer, who threw on his 38th birthday, allowed five hits and walked two while hitting six. In five starts on his birthday, Scherzer is 3-1 with a .82 ERA.
Domingo German, who was starting the season for the second time after missing the first half with a right shoulder injury, gave up two carries in five hits and two walks while striking out seven over 4 2/3 innings.
