Weather – Cyclone Gabrielle devastates New Zealand
The torrential rains hey storm winds which accompanies the passage of Cyclone Gabrielle on New Zealand’s North Island have caused a catastrophe unprecedented in the country’s history over the past century. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has state of emergency declared while the climate minister gave a strong finger-pointing speech to Parliament against global warming. The extent of the damage is not yet known, but the cost will be enormous. Landslides, floods, destroyed bridges, whole numbers submerged neighborhoods with the residents who are in some cases saved by swimming of flooded homes, hundreds of thousands of power outages. But the pictures are certainly more meaningful:

Highway 50 Korokipo Road, near Waiohiki, Napier, right now… 3 bridges away, my parents are completely isolated but happy to live in a house on a hill. Local residents take in those forced to evacuate. #cyclone Gabriel #napier #Flooding pic.twitter.com/o30wsRhWos

Update from my buddy on the hill. He’s stuck between the collapse of the Redcyffe Bridge and the flooding of Fernhill. it’s a real mess over there. Baskets of apples floated down the street. #cyclone Gabriel #napier pic.twitter.com/Q1Z1v6aJM9

In the next hours The center of low pressure, now just off Gisborne in the extreme north-east of the North Island, will gradually shift east, favoring a progressive improvement in bad weather conditions. By the end of Wednesday, the rains should have completely cleared the island, but a return to normal for affected populations will be difficult to achieve in the short term.
