A newborn baby was found alive in a shopping bag in London. The girl was less than an hour old and was wrapped in a towel, police said Friday.

Authorities named the baby Elsa. A walker discovered the child while walking in Newham, east of the British capital, on Thursday evening and informed authorities.

Worry about mom

The baby is unharmed and well and is being cared for in a clinic. The police immediately began a search for the mother. “We are extremely concerned for her welfare as she will have been through a traumatic ordeal and will require immediate medical care after birth,” said Chief Superintendent Simon Crick, of the Metropolitan Police. Experienced doctors are ready. Crick asked the woman to report herself immediately by phone, either to the nearest hospital or a police station.
