Newborn found in shopping bag

A baby has been taken to hospital after being found in a shopping bag by a dog handler in east London, Sky News reports.

Police are trying to find the baby's mother, who they believe needs intensive care.

Police were called to the intersection of Greenway and High Street South in Newham at around 9.13pm on Thursday evening.

The newborn was found wrapped in a towel in the bag, but police report that her life is not in danger, according to information obtained by Sky News.

“I am pleased to report that she was not injured in any way and is safe and in the care of hospital staff,” said Superintendent Simon Crick, who heads Newham Police.

The Met Office said the temperature in London was -3C at the time the baby was found.

Mr Crick added that law enforcement was now “extremely concerned” for the welfare of the baby's mother, who is believed to have “gone through a traumatic ordeal” and will require medical attention if found.

He also urges him to go to the nearest hospital or police station or call 999 for help.
