The series says the new car, which will be raced in the 2024, 2025 and 2026 seasons, is as close as possible to an F1 car in terms of safety and accessibility.

It is powered by a 3.4 liter Mecachrome turbocharged engine and meets the 2024 FIA safety specification.

The championship also hopes to make the car suitable for a wider range of driver sizes to improve accessibility, including for female drivers.

The car completed a successful shakedown at Varano in July with former F2 driver Tatiana Calderon behind the wheel.

The development program will continue throughout the rest of the year with several drivers taking part, including 2022 F2 champion Felipe Drugovich.

One car will be delivered to the teams before the end of December 2023, the second car will be delivered in mid-January 2024.

The car will not have power steering, instead the weight and geometry will be changed.

The FIA hopes to introduce the same steering weight in the single-seater pyramid from F4 onwards.

The car will continue to run on 55% bio-based, sustainable fuel in 2024, but can also accommodate the synthetic, sustainable fuel that will be introduced in 2025.

Before the first official pre-season test there will be a shakedown with the teams, with one car per team.

Series boss Bruno Michel said: “Together with the FIA we have developed a powerful, challenging and safe car that prepares young drivers for Formula 1 and that continues to deliver great racing and plenty of overtaking opportunities, which is what fans have come to expect from F2.

“It has also been designed to suit all types of drivers, taking into account the FIA’s considerations on steering effort. This is obviously key to making our sport more inclusive by improving the handling and comfort of our cars.”

“One of our main focuses remains cost control. That’s why we kept the same engine and gearbox, and there are many carried-over parts from the previous car. Finally, we made sure that the teams could handle this new car.” 12 emergency services in accordance with the sports regulations.

“I would like to thank our partners Aramco, Pirelli, Dallara and Mecachrome, who are instrumental in making this car safe, reliable and the best racing machine to prepare our drivers for Formula 1.”

FIA deputy sporting president Robert Reid said: “The launch of this next generation FIA Formula 2 car marks the start of an exciting new chapter for the championship.”

“The FIA, Formula 2 and their partners have done a tremendous amount of work to put together a truly impressive package focused on close racing, the latest safety technologies, even greater environmental sustainability and greater accessibility for drivers than ever before.”

“This significant step will bring Formula 2 closer to the pinnacle of motorsport and ensure the next generation of drivers are best prepared for the future and deliver a fantastic show to fans around the world.”

“Seeing design philosophies and technologies spill over from Formula 1 to the junior categories is a great testament to the FIA single-seater journey that guides young talent from around the world to successful careers in top competition, and that’s all of us. “I’m looking forward to seeing this car racing next season.”

In the past, some F2 cars had a lifespan of three years before the COVID pandemic extended the current car’s useful life to six years.

The new Formula 3 car will be presented in 2025 and will also run for six years.
