In a statement Thursday, the Cowboys confirmed the 52-year-old has decided to remain with head coach Mike McCarthy for the upcoming season.
“We are all very excited about Dan’s return. I spoke to Dan recently and we care. It offers us the continuity of what we have built over the past two years. Personally, I can’t tell you how grateful I am,” McCarthy said on the team’s website Thursday afternoon.
The main prospect was among the candidates for the pilot’s post with the Arizona Cardinals. Quinn also reportedly had talks with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos.
According to McCarthy, he chose to stay for a number of reasons. Among other things, he believes Quinn has a better chance of winning the title in Dallas than anywhere else.
“Undoubtedly the staff, the players, and having been a head coach, I think he understands how difficult it is at this point in his life to win a Super Bowl. I think he’s in a position where he can be selective, so I’m very happy with his decision.”
The New Jersey native served two seasons as the defensive coordinator with the Cowboys. Prior to that, Quinn was the helm of the Atlanta Falcons from 2015-2020. He was fired by the Georgia team after they started the regular season in five games without a win.
