The National Football League has told the 32 franchises how much they’ve spent firing coaches and front-office managers, and it’s a big number, as you’d expect.

During last week’s owners meetings in Irving, TX. League officials are said to have told teams they’ve spent $800 million over the past five years.

According to ESPN, the numbers were calculated so that league officials had individual spreadsheets for each franchise detailing their expenses on laid-off employees.

Two head coaches were fired that season, with Carolina firing Matt Rhule in October and Indianapolis firing Frank Reich just a month later.

Rhule had four years left on a seven-year, $60 million contract. Reich also had four seasons left of an August 2021 contract that was worth $9 million a year.

Recently, Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson was relieved of his duties after the team lost 35-10 in Philadelphia on Dec. 4.

Robinson had “a full four years remaining on his contract” with the AFC South franchise.

While the mood at the New York Giants building in East Rutherford is upbeat after a prime-time win, his accountants may be a bit overwhelmed.

The G-Men currently pay three, yes three different head coaches. Of course, its current leader in Brian Daboll is paid a salary along with 2021 head coach and predecessor Pat Shurmur.

The judge was fired in January, two years after a five-year agreement. Very similar, Shurmur. was removed over half a decade in 2020 with three years left on his contract.

While the NFL has created and shared this information to raise awareness of the “exact cost of instability,” there will certainly be more of the same this offseason.

The NFL’s famous Black Monday is fast approaching, with a litany of coaches and executives potentially in the hot seat.

Arizona’s GM and trainer pairing Steve Keim and Kliff Kingsbury could be under pressure, alongside Houston’s trainer Lovie Smith and Denver’s Nathaniel Hackett, among others.

Seven franchises have fired their head coach during or after the 2021 NFL season, and that number is expected to be repeated in 2022-23.
