The Philadelphia Eagles were trying to sign top free agent safety Marcus Williams before he joined the Baltimore Ravens. report by Jeff Mosher.
The Eagles were said to be “competitive in negotiations” and “were close” to the terms of a five-year, $70 million contract, which he eventually agreed to.
‘[team] almost got a really good player!” The reports are of no interest to anyone but Danny Ainge. And this is the second one we’ve seen given Philadelphia is also reportedly targeting Christian Kirk seriously..
But it’s still worth noting that the Eagles were interested in making a big splash in terms of safety. The absence of Williams means the team could move to one of the following remaining options (at time of publication):
- Jordan Whitehead
- Marcus May
- Terrell Edmunds
- Jaron Kears
- Tyranne Mathieu
Whitehead may be the most realistic since he will be 25 years old in just a few days. The Eagles are clearly interested in finding a long-term solution in the background.
Mei is not perfect as he just turned 29 and is recovering from an injury. But he’s in a relationship with Eagles defensive end coach Dennard Wilson and could face a year-long trial.
Edmunds and Kears would make a solid, if not impressive, addition. I could be wrong, but I don’t understand the Eagles adding Honey Badger.
Here’s what we know for sure: Philadelphia needs to do something (or something) to keep it safe. 2021 starters Anthony Harris and Rodney McLeod are currently free to discuss terms with other teams. At best, one of them will return in 2022, and it is possible that both of them will leave.
So, with Williams off the board, we continue to play the waiting game.
