Do what we say, not what we do for profit.
The NFL, which has developed a large revenue stream from partnerships with multiple sportsbooks that legally offer sports betting in most states, restricts NFL employees from betting on any sports. Jets receiver Miles Austin has apparently bet on sports other than football.
Now he has been suspended.
The NFL essentially announced via a report according to anonymous sources from NFL Media that Austin has been suspended for betting on sports other than football.
The details have not surfaced yet. The NFL’s internal filing report says there is no indication Austin bet on football.
Austin played in the NFL for 10 years, most of them with the Cowboys. He had 1,320 receiving yards in 2009 and was a two-time Pro Bowler.
It’s the ultimate late Friday bad news heading into the Christmas weekend. But it’s a reminder that the NFL has all sorts of possible complications arising from the legalization of gambling and the league that clings to it.
Beating a regular player or coach that the league catches in the act does nothing to address deeper concerns about less obvious issues, such as z or trying to fix the outcome of games.
Hopefully, while the league is tugging at the low-hanging fruit, they’re also focusing a little higher up the tree.
