One of the biggest Cinderella stories of the 2022 NFL season may have turned into a pumpkin in 2023.
After winning nine games last year, the New York Giants aren’t looking nearly as good this fall, and Monday night was no exception.
The Seattle Seahawks, who looked like a nice middle opponent for the Giants in Week 4, took an early 14-3 lead at halftime of their Monday Night Football game at MetLife Stadium. Seattle scored on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Geno Smith to DK Metcalf to end the first quarter – initiated only after Mario Edwards stripped Daniel Jones and forced a fumble.
The game was full of penalties and injuries at the start. After tearing his quadriceps tendon in Week 1 last season, Jamal Adams officially returned to the field on Monday night. However, Adams was sidelined just one drive into his return game due to a concussion after he injured his knee on his helmet. Smith also entered the medical tent just before halftime, which led to Drew Lock coming into the game in his place. Smith was tackled hard from behind by Isaiah Simmons on the sideline late in the second quarter, and he wasn’t happy about it.
Lock connected with tight end Noah Fant for a 51-yard gain down the sideline, which Kenneth Walker then punched in for a touchdown in the final minutes of the half.
The Giants have been outscored 77-9 in the first half so far this season. They are the only team in the league without a touchdown in the first half.
Smith returned to the game shortly after halftime.
